About the Opportunity

Methanex is currently seeking an Electrician to join the team in Medicine Hat, AB on a full-time basis. 

The Electrical Technician maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and commissions all electrical equipment which includes controls and power systems. In addition, the position can be involved in the design development process for new installations, with the potential for growth into a leadership position.

More specifically, your responsibilities will include:

  • Ensures the reliability of electrical and instrumentation equipment throughout the facility
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical equipment such as Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) and Battery Charger Systems, Electric Motors, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), Motor Operated Valves (MOVs), and Low and High voltage switchgear
  • Executes general maintenance of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) as well as basic programming
  • Cooperates with Operations and other departments to determine causes of failures, recommends system modifications and/or procedures to prevent future failures
  • Develops and performs predictive and preventive maintenance tasks
  • Maintains calibration records for all critical equipment
  • Ensures electrical safety equipment is maintained and tested as per site practices and participates in audits 
  • Assist the Technical department in developing designs for new and upgraded systems
  • Liaises between trades and contractors for the installation of new systems
  • Commissions new installations and maintains commissioning records
  • Develops new procedures as required for new equipment or maintenance processes
  • Ensures employee and contractor compliance with Methanex policies, procedures, and applicable standards
  • Orients and trains new hires and/or summer students
  • Oversees, coordinates, and works with contractors during plant turnarounds and outages
  • Ensures alignment with annual Maintenance department and I/E Team plan
  • Designated legislative compliance contact person with responsibility for ensuring compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code and that proposed changes/updates to the legislation are appropriately communicated
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of municipal standards related to electrical systems and liaise with the municipal Electrical Inspector as required
  • Remain current with all safety and procedural training
  • Ensures compliance with all Pressure Equipment Integrity Management (PEIM) responsibilities, relative to the role, as per the PEIM Manual
  • Conducts all business in a manner that supports the Responsible Care® ethic

About You

To qualify, you will need to be either a certified Journeyperson Instrumentation Technician or Electrician, with a proven understanding of general UPS systems, backup generators, motors, switchgear, and other electrical equipment.

Additionally, the following assets would be preferred, but not required:

  • Master Electrician Certification preferred
  • Electrical Engineering Technologist Diploma or equivalent an asset
  • Fire alarm certification preferred
  • Ability to source reference data for new and legacy equipment
  • Familiarity with Canadian Electrical Code
  • Proficient in Modicon PLC programming and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of Delta V DCS systems
  • Skill with various specialized multimeters and test equipment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Comprehension of complex control systems
  • Knowledge of general Instrumentation and Valves an asset
  • Knowledge of infrared thermography an asset
  • Thermal Graphic Imaging and CMS software proficiency an asset
  • Experience with Adobe/Visio/Bluebeam software an asset
  • Proficiency in reading Piping and Instrumentation drawings, loop drawings, data sheets, and electrical diagrams an asset
